A Canadian side hustler can receive three kinds of paper for 2026 income: a T4A from a business that paid you fees for services, a T5018 from a construction contractor, and an annual report from a digital platform. None of them changes what is taxable. They change what the CRA already knows. This guide covers who issues each one, when, and where the amount goes on your return.
This is general information about CRA rules, read October 15, 2026.
Which slips can a side hustler receive for 2026 income in Canada?
| Paper | Who issues it | Trigger on the CRA or legal page | Where it goes on your return |
|---|---|---|---|
| T4A, box 048 | A business that paid you fees for services | More than $500 paid in the calendar year, or tax deducted from any payment | Self-employment lines 13499 to 14300, via Form T2125 |
| T5018 | A contractor whose business income is mainly from construction | More than $500 paid to a subcontractor in the reporting period, not counting GST/HST | Self-employment income on Form T2125 |
| Platform seller report | A reporting digital platform (goods, rentals, rideshare and delivery, personal services) | You are a reportable seller for the calendar year | No box of its own: use it to check the income you report on Form T2125 |
When do you get a T4A for side hustle work in Canada?
You may get a T4A when a business pays you to provide a service outside an employment relationship. The CRA’s fees for services page says a payer generally reports the payment in box 048 if it was not made to an employee, the fee was actually paid, and the payer paid at least $500 in the year or deducted tax. Under the CRA’s administrative policy, a slip must be issued if the total of all payments in the calendar year was more than $500 or tax was deducted. The payer does not include GST/HST or PST in box 048.
The same page says the CRA is currently not assessing penalties for failures relating to box 048 except under a new policy for payments to trucking corporations. In practice, that means some payers issue T4As and some do not. A missing T4A does not mean the income is missing from your return.
T4As are due to recipients by the last day of February, according to the CRA’s when to file page. For 2026 payments, watch for them in February 2027.
The CRA’s T4A guide for individuals says to enter the box 048 amount on the applicable self-employment line of your return, lines 13499 to 14300. You do that through Form T2125, where you also claim the expenses.
When do you get a T5018 for construction side hustle work?
A T5018 comes from a contractor, not from a homeowner. The CRA’s T5018 page says a business must issue a T5018 slip, or send the CRA a listing, when more than 50% of its business income is from construction activities, it paid Canadian-resident subcontractors for construction services, and the total paid to a subcontractor in the period was more than $500, not including GST/HST.
Construction is broad. The CRA’s list of common construction activities includes drywalling, painting and decorating, fencing, finish carpentry, flooring, roofing, and demolition, on structures that include personal homes. If you do drywall, deck, or demolition work for a renovation company, you may appear on its T5018. If you hang shelves for a homeowner, you will not, because the homeowner is not a construction business.
The T5018 return is due six months after the end of the reporting period the payer chose, calendar or fiscal year. So a contractor on a calendar year has until June 30, 2027 for 2026 payments, months after you may have filed. The $500 test excludes GST/HST, but the CRA tells payers to include GST/HST and PST in the box 22 amount, so the slip can be higher than your pre-tax invoice total. If you never receive a copy, the contractor may still have reported the payment.
What does a platform send you by January 31?
The Reporting Rules for Digital Platform Operators, in Part XX of the Income Tax Act, apply to platforms used to sell goods, rent property, provide rideshare and delivery, or provide personal services. Under section 291, a reporting platform operator must report to the CRA, and give the reportable seller the same information, no later than January 31 of the year after the calendar year in which the seller was identified as reportable. The CRA’s information shared page says your platform operator will provide you a copy of the annual information it reported.
For 2026 activity, that copy is due by January 31, 2027. It is not a T-slip with a box number. Compare its totals with your own records before you file, and keep it with your return papers. Which sellers are reportable, and what totals the platform includes, depend on the rules and the platform; this guide does not list thresholds.
How do you reconcile slips with your own records?
Start from your own income records, then tick each slip against them. The CRA expects you to report all business income on Form T2125 whether or not a slip arrives.
Illustrative example
Teaching sketch with assumed numbers, not a real return. Suppose a side hustler earned $9,400 of 2026 income across three sources:
| Source | Your records (assumed) | Paper received | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bookkeeping for a small business | $4,200 | T4A, box 048: $4,200 | Matches; include in T2125 gross income |
| Drywall days for a renovation company | $2,800 | None yet (a T5018 may come months later) | Include anyway |
| Delivery through an app | $2,400 | Platform report: $2,550 | Find the $150 difference before filing |
| Total gross on T2125 | $9,400 | Use your reconciled figure |
Arithmetic: $4,200 + $2,800 + $2,400 = $9,400. If the $150 gap is, for example, a tip or an adjustment you did not log, correct your records and report $9,550. If the platform’s figure is wrong, keep your evidence. Either way, the T2125 total comes from your records, checked against the paper.
What mistakes do side hustlers make with T4A and platform slips?
- Reporting only what is on slips. Payers under $500, homeowners, and cash clients do not issue them.
- Putting box 048 on line 10400. The CRA directs box 048 to the self-employment lines, which is also where you claim expenses against it.
- Counting the same income twice. A T4A and your own invoice list describe the same money. Report it once.
- Mixing up GST/HST. Box 048 excludes GST/HST and PST, but T5018 box 22 includes them. If you are registered, the tax you collected belongs on your GST/HST return, not in your income.
- Filing before February ends. T4As can arrive until the end of February. Filing early is fine if your records are complete; just do not assume the slips are.
Which tax rules apply around these slips?
Self-employment income from all three sources goes on Form T2125, and self-employed people pay both shares of CPP on net self-employment earnings. If you are self-employed, the CRA’s dates page for 2025 returns gives a June 15 filing deadline and an April 30 payment deadline; the 2026-return dates were not yet posted on October 15, 2026. What can this guide not confirm?
This guide cannot confirm whether a particular payer or platform will send you a slip, which sellers a platform treats as reportable, or how the CRA would assess your return. CRA pages were read on October 15, 2026, and forms and line numbers can change. This is not tax advice.
Which guides sit next to side hustle tax slips?
Rideshare and app income is covered in how to report side hustle income. Contractor status questions are in freelance contracts. Expense claims against slip income are in side hustle expense deductions.
What are the common questions?
Do I have to report side hustle income if I did not get a T4A?
Yes. The CRA expects all business income on Form T2125. A T4A is issued only in some cases, such as more than $500 of fees for services in a calendar year, and the CRA says it is not currently assessing most box 048 penalties, so many payers never issue one.
Where does T4A box 048 go on my tax return?
The CRA says to enter box 048 on the applicable self-employment line of your return, lines 13499 to 14300, which you complete through Form T2125.
When are T4A slips due for 2026 income?
The CRA's when-to-file page says T4A slips are due by the last day of February following the calendar year, so February 2027 for 2026 payments.
Will I get a T5018 for renovation work?
Only if you worked for a business whose income is mainly from construction and it paid you more than $500 in its reporting period, excluding GST/HST. The amount in box 22 includes GST/HST and PST, and the return is due six months after the payer's period ends.
What does a gig platform have to send me?
Under section 291 of the Income Tax Act, a reporting platform operator must give each reportable seller the information it reported to the CRA no later than January 31 of the following year.
