The 2027 side hustle reality check for Canadians is a reread of the rates, thresholds, and platform rules that actually changed, plus a reminder that most “new” income ideas are an older idea with the costs left out. This page uses figures published for 2026. It does not invent 2027 rates that the CRA and the provinces have not posted. When a number is indexed, the habit is to open the same government URL in January, not to trust a blog to freeze it.
This is not tax, legal, or financial advice. The menu of work that pays because you showed up is best side hustles in Canada. A dollar target with the hours written out is side hustles that can reach $1,000 a month.
Which tax numbers should Canadian side hustlers recheck for 2027?
Recheck four federal figures before you copy a 2026 note into a 2027 spreadsheet. Each one lives on a CRA page that gets a new row when the year turns.
| Figure | What the 2026 pages say | What to do in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| GST/HST small supplier | Register after more than $30,000 in taxable supplies over four consecutive calendar quarters, or in a single quarter (CRA) | Add every hustle together. The threshold is not per app |
| CPP, outside Quebec | Self-employed rate 11.9% on pensionable earnings. 2026 ceiling $74,600. Maximum self-employed contribution $8,460.90 (CRA rates) | Quebec uses the Quebec Pension Plan. Confirm that rate on Retraite Québec |
| CPP2 | 8% for a self-employed person on earnings between the first ceiling and the second. For 2026 the second ceiling is $85,000 and the maximum is $832 (CRA) | You do not pay CPP on dividends or interest |
| TFSA dollar limit | $7,000 for 2026 (CRA) | The 2027 limit was not on that page. Room is personal. Check the CRA account |
Self-employment profit still goes on Form T2125. Renting out property is often Form T776 instead. The choice is T2125 vs T776. Short answers people mix up are in the side hustle tax FAQ. How to file the business half is how to report side hustle income.
Illustrative example
This sketch uses the 2026 self-employed CPP maximum as a teaching number. It is not your tax bill and not a typical side hustle.
Suppose net self-employment income is high enough to hit the 2026 maximum. The CRA table lists that maximum as $8,460.90, before any CPP2. Suppose you also owe income tax on the profit. The CPP line alone is $8,460.90 ÷ 12 = about $705 a month if you spread the year’s maximum evenly, which is a budgeting sketch, not how the CRA bills you. You still set cash aside through the year. The point is that a gross payout from an app is not the amount you can spend. Do not copy $705 into a quote.
FreshBooks is one way to keep the year’s invoices in one place before that check. A spreadsheet is enough if you update it.
What gig-app pay rules are in force, and what they do not cover?
Ontario and British Columbia are the provinces with a published floor for app-based delivery and rides. The floor is not an hourly wage for the whole shift.
- Ontario: digital platform workers must be paid at least the general minimum wage for a work assignment or a pay period, tips excluded (Ontario). The general minimum is $17.95 from October 1, 2026 (Ontario minimum wage).
- British Columbia: $21.89 per hour of engaged time from June 1, 2026, plus at least $0.35 per kilometre for delivery by transport other than walking (B.C.).
Engaged time starts when you accept and ends when you finish or the order is cancelled. Minutes you spend waiting for the next ping are yours. The worksheet is your real hourly rate on gig apps. The quit-or-stay test is when to quit a gig app. Skip’s own zone limits, which are not a wage, are in the SkipTheDishes courier review. Uber Eats is the Uber Eats courier review. The three-way comparison is Uber Eats vs DoorDash vs Skip.
Other provinces do not have an equivalent floor on the pages this guide checked. If you drive there, the offer on the screen is the number, minus your costs.
Which income ideas still fail a basic cost test?
The ideas that disappoint are the ones sold without hours, fees, or permission. None of the pages below has a national earnings average this site can cite. What they do have is a cost or a rule the pitch skips.
- A file you have not made yet. Digital products and passive income are the hours-first versions. A channel that still needs uploads is faceless YouTube.
- A store that does not hold the product. Dropshipping still has ads, refunds, and customs. The wider set is overhyped side hustles.
- A course that sells the income instead of the skill. The buying test is course funnel red flags.
- A leased apartment listed by the night. Toronto and much of B.C. require a principal residence. That warning is Airbnb arbitrage red flags. A legal longer rental is renting out a room or basement suite.
- Dividends as a substitute for work. How much capital $500 a month implies is a labelled sketch, not a stock pick.
- Tiny paid tasks. Beermoney apps are pocket money with the caps stated. They are not a rent payment.
- Local work with a real kit. Pet waste removal and garbage bin cleaning are unglamorous on purpose. The costs are on those pages, not in a guaranteed-route ad.
What did Canadians report losing to job fraud, and where does a report go?
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s top 10 frauds in 2025 page says the centre received over 112,000 fraud reports involving more than $704 million in reported losses. Job fraud on that page is 2,148 reports, 1,726 victims, and $50.6 million. Those are reported figures, not a complete count of what happened in the country. The pattern, including pay-to-unlock offers, is side hustle scams and task scams. Where to file is where to report a side hustle scam: local police, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501, and your bank if money moved.
How should you run this check once a year?
Do it in January, or after a province changes a minimum wage, and write the answers down. The newsletter at the bottom of this site is where later updates land. There is no separate ebook to buy for this list.
Step 1: Add up taxable sales
Put every hustle in one total and compare it with the $30,000 GST/HST line. One app under the line does not keep you under the line.
Step 2: Separate profit from payouts
Gross deposits minus the costs you paid. For a car, that includes fuel and a share of insurance. For a digital file, that includes the hours, even though the hours are not a CRA deduction of their own.
Step 3: Read the floor that applies to you
If you deliver in Ontario or B.C., compare your log with the engaged-time floor, then with all-in hours. If you do not, skip the floor and use your own number.
Step 4: Park the profit on purpose
A payout that sits in the same account as rent gets spent. What to do with side hustle profits is the next decision, after tax is set aside. It is not a reason to buy a course.
Step 5: Drop one idea that failed the page test
If a pitch cannot show its costs, its permission, or its typical result, it does not get another month. The replacement is a hustle already on the national list, not a new funnel.
