Cashback and receipt apps in Canada return a slice of money you were already going to spend, if you remember to start at the app or to photograph the receipt. They suit a household that shops online or buys the same groceries every week. They do not suit someone looking for income without spending. Several apps that US articles still recommend either never launched a Canadian payout or now say the offer is for the United States.
Figures below come from the companies’ own pages, checked on October 6, 2026. The wider map is beermoney apps. Survey panels, which sometimes sit in the same apps, are survey sites.
Which cashback apps pay Canadians in 2026?
| App | What you do | Payout | Minimum | Canada note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rakuten.ca | Start at Rakuten, then shop. In-store cash back can use a linked card. Gift cards are a separate shop. | CAD, every quarter, by Interac e-Transfer, cheque, or PayPal | $5.01 of confirmed cash back. Bonus and referral rewards do not count toward the minimum. | Canadian site. Not the same account as Rakuten.com. |
| Caddle | Upload a receipt for a listed offer, or do other in-app activities | Interac e-Transfer to your email | $20 in cash-back credits | Terms say you must be a resident of Canada. The how-it-works page says that as of 2021 the app is only available in Canada, and that it accepts Canadian receipts. |
| Checkout 51 | Photograph receipts for listed offers | The public homepage does not offer a Canadian payout | Not applicable on that page | Homepage says “Available to United States members only.” A Français (CA) language option is on the same page. |
| Ibotta | Offers on receipts and shopping | Withdrawal needs a verifiable phone | Not a Canadian setup | Help says functions beyond a narrow military case do not work outside the US, and a foreign number cannot be verified. |
Rakuten’s payment calendar, from its FAQ, is purchases posted January 1–March 31 paid May 15, April 1–June 30 paid August 15, July 1–September 30 paid November 15, and October 1–December 31 paid February 15. Cash back can sit in Pending until the store’s return window ends. Travel cash back often confirms only after the trip. If confirmed cash back is under $5.01, Rakuten carries it to the next quarter. The terms say the minimum is $5.01 and that members are paid in Canadian dollars (FAQ, terms).
Caddle’s terms say that once credits reach $20 you can request a cash-out, and that you must be a Canadian resident of legal age to contract. The how-it-works page says the transfer is Interac e-Transfer and that pending receipts are not included in the cash-out (how it works, terms).
What happened to the US receipt apps?
Checkout 51 still shows up in Canadian app roundups. On October 6, 2026 its public homepage says the offer is available to United States members only, next to a Français (CA) language toggle. This guide did not find a separate Canadian payout page. If you already have a login, check that account rather than assuming the US homepage pays a Canadian e-Transfer.
Ibotta tells US service members that additional functions of the normal app do not work outside the United States, and that withdrawal needs a US phone number that can receive calls or texts. A separate help article says a number based outside the US cannot be verified. That is enough to treat Ibotta as not a Canadian cash-back tool (military bases, phone verification).
Fetch Rewards did not have an official country page this guide could confirm. Check the app store page for your region before you install it. Drop is another name people still search. This guide did not find a current official Canadian payout page for it, so it is not listed as working.
Rakuten.com is the American site. Rakuten Canada says the two accounts are separate even if you reuse an email and password. The .com account pays US dollars. The .ca account pays Canadian dollars. The balances cannot be combined. Shopping a US store through Rakuten.ca can also change the cash-back amount, because Rakuten converts USD orders to CAD using the rate on the purchase date (FAQ).
How do you actually get the cash back?
Step 1: Use Rakuten.ca, not a US link
Create the account on rakuten.ca. Set the payment method to Interac e-Transfer if you want it in your bank, or to a verified PayPal if you prefer. Update the address before a cheque run if you choose the cheque. Rakuten says sender fees on Interac and PayPal are on them.
Step 2: Start the trip at Rakuten
The store pays Rakuten a commission only when the click is tracked. A purchase you typed straight into the store’s site often earns nothing. The FAQ describes statuses: Pending (still in the return window), Scheduled (included in the next payment unless you return the item), Confirmed (in the payable balance), and Ineligible (excluded item, coupon, or cancellation).
Step 3: Use Caddle only for offers you were going to buy
Caddle says you can shop at any store in Canada, and that the receipt has to show the exact product, which it checks with the description and the UPC. An offer you would not have bought is not “free money.” It is a purchase plus a rebate that might be rejected.
Step 4: Wait for the threshold
Rakuten will not send $3. Confirmed cash back under $5.01 rolls forward, and sign-up or referral bonuses do not count toward that $5.01. Caddle will not send an e-Transfer under $20. A light shopper can sit under either line for more than one quarter. That is the published rule, not a missing payment.
Step 5: Watch duty on cross-border orders
Rakuten.ca lists some merchants that ship only to the United States, and it says duty on shipments to Canada depends on the merchant. A cash-back rate does not pay the duty, the brokerage fee, or a return to another country. Read the store’s shipping note on the Rakuten page before you chase a higher percentage.
What mistakes do Canadians make with cashback apps?
- Downloading the US app because a video said “Rakuten” or “Checkout 51.” The country on the store listing matters.
- Forgetting the click. No tracked trip, no commission, no cash back.
- Counting Pending as paid. Pending can disappear if you return the item.
- Letting a bonus confuse the minimum. Rakuten excludes bonus rewards from the $5.01 test.
- Buying something only for the rebate. If the rebate is $1 and you did not need the item, you spent money to collect a dollar that may not even clear the payout minimum this quarter.
Illustrative example
Assumed cash-back amounts, using Rakuten’s real $5.01 rule. Suppose three tracked orders confirm at $1.40, $2.10, and $1.20. The sum is $4.70. That is under $5.01, so the May, August, November, or February payment does not include it. One more confirmed $0.50 later makes $5.20, which clears the minimum and can go out on the next scheduled date, still only after those amounts are confirmed rather than pending. This is not a typical shopping month. It only shows the threshold.
Are cashback rewards taxable in Canada?
This guide does not give a yes or no. A rebate on a personal grocery run is not the same thing as being paid to do a task, and the CRA pages that govern business income do not walk through every loyalty program. Survey points, cash-back, and bank bonuses are collected in are rewards and bonuses taxable. Bank sign-up offers, which are not receipt apps, are in bank account bonuses. If you use Rakuten or Caddle as part of a business (you buy stock to resell, and the rebate reduces the cost), keep the statements with your other records and see how to report side hustle income.
This is not tax, legal, or insurance advice.
Which guides sit next to cashback apps in Canada?
Beermoney apps for studies and tests that pay without a purchase. Survey sites for opinion panels. US-only apps for the skip list. Resellers who buy inventory should track rebates inside reselling startup costs rather than treating them as spending money. Points for Bing and Xbox, which are not a receipt rebate, are Microsoft Rewards.
What are the common questions?
What cashback apps work in Canada in 2026?
Rakuten.ca pays confirmed cash back in Canadian dollars by Interac e-Transfer, cheque, or PayPal. Caddle pays Canadian residents by Interac e-Transfer once credits reach 20 dollars. Confirm the live app listing before you rely on any other name.
Is Rakuten.com the same as Rakuten.ca?
No. Rakuten Canada says they are separate accounts. The US site pays US dollars and the Canadian site pays Canadian dollars. The balances cannot be combined.
Does Checkout 51 still work in Canada?
The public homepage checked on October 6, 2026 says the offer is available to United States members only. It also shows a French Canada language option. If you have an older Canadian account, check that account rather than assuming the US site pays you.
When does Rakuten pay Canadians?
Quarterly. The FAQ lists payments on May 15, August 15, November 15, and February 15 for the previous quarter's posted purchases. Confirmed cash back under 5.01 dollars is carried to the next payment. Bonuses do not count toward that minimum.
Is grocery cash back taxable in Canada?
