Seasonal holiday jobs in Canada are temporary retail, warehouse, and delivery roles that employers post for the year-end rush, plus separate gig offers that are not the same legal relationship. The employee path suits someone who can take the shift on the posting, including nights and weekends. The gig path suits someone who already understands vehicle insurance and self-employment tax, which is a different article.
This page does not invent a wage. Where a range appears, it is Job Bank’s published figure for an occupation, with the date and the survey period beside it. A posting on an employer’s site is the wage for that requisition. Other buildings and other cities can differ. The self-employed courier version of delivery is package courier work. The menu of winter businesses you run yourself is the winter side hustles roundup.
How does seasonal hiring work in Canada?
Seasonal hiring in Canada is an employer filling a temporary schedule, usually from fall applications through early January, for work that exists because parcel and store volume rises. You apply on the employer’s career site or on Job Bank, you read the shift and the end date on that requisition, and you do not treat last year’s posting as this year’s offer.
| Question | Employee seasonal job | Gig or contractor offer |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the hours | The employer, on the posting and the schedule | You accept or decline offers, inside the platform’s rules |
| Who pays source deductions | The employer, when the CRA sees an employment | You, if the CRA sees a business |
| Where the wage is written | On the requisition | In the offer or the app, which can change |
| Public holiday rules | The statute that covers that employer | Usually not employment standards, if you are self-employed |
| Example doors | Canada Post jobs, Amazon hiring, Walmart Canada careers, Job Bank | Spark Driver, Amazon Flex, and similar apps |
Canada Post’s jobs site is the application door for postal work. Amazon’s hiring site for Canada lists hourly warehouse and customer roles and tells applicants to look at current postings. Walmart Canada’s careers site lists store jobs by location. Job Bank’s job search collects postings from many employers, including smaller stores that do not operate a national career portal. Grocery, drug, and hardware banners post on their own career sites as well. Use the employer’s page. A recruiter who asks you to pay a fee to be hired is a reason to stop and go back to the official site.
Fall 2026 requisitions on Canada Post’s job site for temporary postal clerks described a peak window running from the second Sunday of November through the third Saturday of January, and each requisition carried its own hourly rate, city, and closing date. A closed requisition is not an offer you can still accept. Search the live board. Do not treat one Alberta rate as the rate in another province.
Where should you look for retail, warehouse, and delivery jobs in Canada?
Look for seasonal retail, warehouse, and delivery jobs in Canada on the employer’s own career site first, then on Job Bank, and read the work site’s city before you apply. A warehouse address an hour from home is a different job from a store you can walk to, even when the title looks the same.
Step 1: Retail floors
Retail seasonal work is cashiers, stock, fitting rooms, and online-order pickup inside a store. Walmart Canada’s careers site is one national board. Other chains use their own boards. Job Bank is the cross-check. The posting should say the store address, the employment type, and the schedule. “Seasonal” on a banner ad is not the schedule. The requisition is the schedule.
Step 2: Warehouses
Warehouse seasonal work is picking, packing, and moving cartons inside a building the employer controls. Amazon’s Canadian hiring site groups fulfillment, sortation, delivery-station, and extra-large warehouse associate roles, and it says schedules vary. Apply to the building you can reach at the shift start, including overnight starts. Canada Post’s temporary postal clerk postings described standing, bending, lifting, and carrying, and shifts that can include days, evenings, nights, and weekends. Those physical lines were on those requisitions. Another employer will write its own.
Step 3: Delivery as an employee
Employee delivery uses the employer’s vehicle or a route the employer controls, and the posting says so. Job Bank’s delivery truck driver wage report, below, describes an occupation. It is not a list of who is hiring this week. If the ad says you must use your own car and your own insurance, stop and read the gig section. That is a different risk.
Step 4: Read the end date
Temporary means the requisition should say when the job ends, or that an end date will be set. Ask if it does not. A hope that a seasonal job becomes permanent is not a plan. Budget the rent from the dates that are written.
What wages does Job Bank publish for these occupations in Canada?
Job Bank publishes prevailing hourly wages for occupations, not a Christmas bonus and not the rate on a seasonal contract. The three tables below were updated on 19 November 2025. The reference period is 2023–2024, from the Labour Force Survey, Statistics Canada, except where Job Bank itself marks a different source. They are not a forecast for December 2026. Replace them with the number on the posting you are offered.
National figures:
| Occupation | NOC | Low | Median | High | Job Bank page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retail salesperson | 64100 | $15.00 | $17.31 | $28.85 | Retail salesperson wages |
| Material handler | 75101 | $16.55 | $22.00 | $30.29 | Material handler wages |
| Delivery truck driver | 75201 | $15.00 | $20.00 | $29.35 | Delivery truck driver wages |
Two provincial rows, so a national median is not mistaken for a local one:
| Occupation | British Columbia low / median / high | Ontario low / median / high |
|---|---|---|
| Retail salesperson | $18.25 / $18.72 / $30.00 | $17.95 / $17.95 / $28.85 |
| Material handler | $18.25 / $22.00 / $33.99 | $17.95 / $21.50 / $29.96 |
| Delivery truck driver | $18.25 / $20.00 / $30.00 | $17.95 / $20.00 / $30.00 |
On the retail salesperson page, Ontario’s published low and median are the same figure, $17.95. That is what the table showed on the update dated 19 November 2025. It is not a claim that every Ontario cashier earns that amount. Northwest Territories material-handler wages were marked unavailable on that page, with a pointer to the national figure. Read the note on the row you care about. Some territories use a small-area estimate for a different year. This guide does not copy those cells into the national story.
Job Bank also publishes the share of workers in the occupation who receive at least one non-wage benefit: 58.5 percent for retail salespersons, 81.6 percent for material handlers, and 56.9 percent for delivery truck drivers, at the Canada level, on those same pages. Benefits in Job Bank’s definition can include pensions, health coverage, leave, sick days, vacation, and employer payroll contributions. A six-week seasonal hire may receive fewer of those than the occupation-wide percentage. The percentage is not a promise attached to a temporary requisition. Read the benefits line on the posting.
Illustrative example. Suppose you multiply Job Bank’s Canada median by an assumed 20 hours. The 20 hours are an assumption about a part-time week, not a schedule any employer offered. Retail salesperson: 20 × $17.31 = $346.20. Material handler: 20 × $22.00 = $440.00. Delivery truck driver: 20 × $20.00 = $400.00. Those products are gross arithmetic on a 2023–2024 occupation median. They are not a job offer, not a seasonal contract, and not pay after tax. Statutory deductions come off an employee cheque. Use the hourly figure printed on your requisition instead, then multiply by the hours that requisition actually schedules.
How do public holidays work for seasonal employees in Canada?
Public holidays for seasonal employees in Canada follow the statute that covers that workplace, not a single national Christmas rule. Boxing Day is the example that splits the map.
Ontario’s public holidays guide lists nine public holidays, including Christmas Day and Boxing Day (December 26). Most employees who qualify are entitled to the day off with public holiday pay. The guide’s formula uses regular wages earned, plus vacation pay payable, in the four work weeks before the work week of the holiday, divided by 20. Someone who was not yet working in those four weeks can see a small or zero result. The guide includes a layoff example in which public holiday pay for Christmas Day and Boxing Day is $0 because no wages were earned in the prior four work weeks. Read the qualifying rules before you count on holiday pay in your first week.
Ontario also says some businesses, including hotels, restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, and continuous operations, can require work on a public holiday without the employee’s agreement when the holiday falls on a day the employee would normally work and the employee is not on vacation. The employer then chooses between a substitute day and public holiday pay plus premium pay. The same page says certain retail workers in continuous operations have a right to refuse a public holiday because of separate retail rules, and it points to the guide’s retail workers chapter. Retail is not one sentence. Read Ontario’s retail workers chapter if you will work in an Ontario store. The guide was updated 8 July 2024 on the public holidays page. Recheck it.
British Columbia’s statutory holidays page, updated 1 January 2026, says Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, and Boxing Day are not statutory holidays in B.C. Christmas Day in 2026 is listed as Friday, December 25. Boxing Day is absent. A B.C. store can still close, and an employer can still pay a premium by contract or policy. That is not the same as the Employment Standards Act entitlement Ontario describes for December 26.
Canada Post’s employment relationship is not the Ontario Employment Standards Act. The Canada Labour Code is the federal statute. Read the posting and any collective agreement for the site you applied to. This guide does not restate the Code’s general-holiday list as if it were Ontario’s nine days.
How is a gig delivery offer different from a seasonal job in Canada?
A gig delivery offer in Canada pays you as a business or as a platform user, not as a seasonal employee on a store schedule. Spark Driver is Walmart Canada’s contractor-style delivery app. Amazon Flex is Amazon’s delivery program using your vehicle, listed by location on the Flex site. Both are covered as courier work in the package courier guide. An Amazon fulfillment-centre associate hired through hiring.amazon.ca is a different door from Flex.
The Canada Revenue Agency cancelled publication RC4110 on 30 January 2026. Its cancellation page points readers to employment-status guidance. The longer Employee or Self-employed text still describes how status is decided from the relationship as a whole, not from a label. Factors it discusses include the payer’s control, who provides tools, whether the worker can subcontract or hire assistants, financial risk, responsibility for investment and management, opportunity for profit, and written contracts. Quebec uses the Civil Code factors, not the common-law list. A poster that says “contractor” does not settle the question. Either party can ask the CRA for a CPP/EI ruling. This guide is not a ruling.
If you are an employee, the employer deducts income tax, Canada Pension Plan or Quebec Pension Plan contributions, and Employment Insurance when those deductions apply, and remits them. If you are self-employed, you report business income and you pay the whole Canada Pension Plan contribution on the net, as other guides on this site describe for sole proprietors. Do not file a warehouse paycheque as if it were an invoice, and do not file Flex earnings as if a T4 will appear when the platform treats you as a business. Keep the pay statements either way.
Vehicle insurance for gig delivery is the province where the car is plated. The courier guide is the place for that conversation. A seasonal job in the employer’s van does not put your personal car into commercial delivery. Read the posting so you know which one you accepted.
What should you prepare before a seasonal application in Canada?
Prepare for a seasonal application in Canada with identification the employer lists, availability that matches the real month, and clothes that survive the building. Do not buy a uniform until the offer says you must supply it.
Warehouse and delivery walking is hard on ordinary shoes. A pair of slip-resistant work shoes TODO-AFFILIATE is worth buying after you know the dress code, not before. A high-visibility layer TODO-AFFILIATE matters if any of the shift is in a yard or a parking lot. Check the employer’s shoe policy before you order. Retail ranges move, and a listing is not a safety certification. Confirm the standard the site actually requires.
Pay from a temporary job can sit apart from rent money so a short season does not vanish into ordinary spending. KOHO TODO-AFFILIATE is one Canadian account that can hold that separation. It is not a paycheque and it does not change deductions. If you also take self-employed courier offers, invoices and kilometre notes belong in a record. FreshBooks TODO-AFFILIATE is one option once you have more than a handful of gig payouts. Employees do not need invoicing software for a T4 job. Check plan prices before you subscribe.
What mistakes do seasonal applicants make in Canada?
Seasonal applicants in Canada accept a shift they cannot reach, ignore the end date, and treat a Job Bank median as the offer. They also mix a store employee job with a bring-your-own-car gig and insure neither conversation. Another mistake is assuming Boxing Day pay because a friend in another province received it. Ontario lists December 26. British Columbia’s statutory list does not.
Quitting a permanent hour to chase a six-week peak is a math problem you should do with the posting’s dates in front of you. The illustrative 20-hour sketch above is not that math until you insert the real rate and the real weeks.
Which guides sit next to seasonal holiday jobs in Canada?
Seasonal holiday jobs in Canada sit next to work you invoice yourself. Package courier and food delivery are the gig side of the same season. Holiday gift wrapping is a booth you run. Christmas light installation is a ladder business with a take-down. The comparison page is the winter side hustles roundup.
What are the common questions?
Does this guide list holiday wages for Canadian retailers?
No. It lists Job Bank prevailing wages for three occupations, updated 19 November 2025, from the 2023–2024 Labour Force Survey unless the row says otherwise. The wage you will earn is the wage on the employer's requisition. Confirm that page before you rely on it.
Where do I apply for Canada Post, Amazon, or Walmart seasonal work?
Use jobs.canadapost.ca, hiring.amazon.ca, and careers.walmart.ca, plus Job Bank's job search for other employers. Apply to the city and the shift you can actually work. A closed requisition is not an offer.
Is Amazon Flex the same as an Amazon warehouse job?
No. Flex is a delivery program that uses your vehicle, described on flex.amazon.ca. Warehouse associate roles are posted on hiring.amazon.ca. The tax and insurance consequences differ. If you are unsure of employment status, the CRA can issue a CPP/EI ruling.
Do seasonal employees get paid for Boxing Day in Canada?
Ontario lists Boxing Day, December 26, among nine public holidays, with qualifying rules that can produce little or no pay if you had no wages in the prior four work weeks. British Columbia's statutory holiday list does not include Boxing Day. Federal workplaces such as Canada Post follow federal labour standards, not the Ontario Act. Read the statute that covers your job.
Can I do Spark Driver and a store job in the same month?
Only if both schedules fit and you understand that one may be employment and the other may be self-employment. Report each stream the way the CRA's status factors describe. Your employer's contract may also limit outside work. Read it.
Are Job Bank benefit percentages guaranteed for a six-week hire?
No. The percentages are the share of workers in the whole occupation who receive at least one non-wage benefit. A temporary posting lists its own benefits, which may be none. Read the requisition.
