The first week of package courier work in Canada is a zone check and a signup, and it is often a waitlist rather than a van full of parcels. Package courier work means delivering orders that are already packed, through an app such as Spark Driver or Amazon Flex, for people who can lift, wait at a pickup, and fit the order in a covered cargo area.
If your town is missing from both official lists, the fortnight does not create a warehouse. The setup is in how to start package courier work in Canada. Costs are in package courier startup costs.
| Fact | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Spark pay model | Independent contractors, paid for each completed delivery, choose which offers to accept. Spark Driver Canada |

| Spark tips | The Play listing says drivers keep 100 percent of confirmed customer tips |
| Amazon Flex cities | Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, London, Toronto (GTA), Hamilton, Halifax, Ottawa, and Windsor. Locations |
| Amazon Flex eligibility | 19 or older, a 4-door midsize or larger, a full Canadian licence, a SIN, a bank account, a smartphone, and a background check. FAQ |
| Amazon.ca blocks | Typically 2 to 4 hours, from a delivery station to the customer, on that FAQ |
Hot food is food delivery. Choosing the groceries yourself is grocery shopping.
What does the first week of package courier work in Canada involve?
The first week of package courier work in Canada involves proving the app operates where you live, submitting one application, and driving only if an offer or a block is actually available. Spark’s Play listing says that after the enrollment form and background check, you are notified when your preferred zone has availability. Amazon’s FAQ says that if you join an interest list, spots are not available yet and Amazon will email you when they are. Both outcomes can use the full 14 days. That wait is information. It is not a cue to buy a cargo van.
Where can you even sign up for package courier work in Canada?
Package courier work in Canada is not nationwide. Spark Driver Canada says you can currently receive offers from Walmart locations in the Peel Halton Region, London, GTA, Durham Region, Hamilton-Burlington Region, Niagara, St. Catharine’s, Waterloo Region, Ottawa, Barrie, Edmonton, Calgary, Surrey, Vancouver, Burnaby, Halifax, Dartmouth, Fredericton, Bedford, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Moncton, St. John’s, Windsor, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Bolton, Regina, Saskatoon, Guelph, and Abbotsford. The page’s own spelling includes “St. Catharine’s.” The list can change. If your town is missing, check the app.
Amazon Flex locations in Canada lists Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, London, Toronto (GTA), Hamilton, Halifax, Ottawa, and Windsor. The page says that if your city is not listed you can still create an account so Amazon can tell you when an opportunity exists. A United States Flex checklist does not belong on a Canadian application.
| Spark Driver Canada | Amazon Flex in Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| What you deliver | Customer orders from listed Walmart locations | Packages from a station. Blocks are typically 2 to 4 hours |
| How week one can look | Background check, then a notice when the zone has room | An interest list and an email later, or onboarding if a spot is open |
| Vehicle | A car, plus vehicle insurance, on the Play listing | A 4-door midsize or larger. Open truck beds are not eligible |
| What the page does not publish | A wage | A guaranteed hourly result. Ignore earnings ranges on marketing pages |
What do Spark and Amazon Flex ask for during signup in Canada?
Spark and Amazon Flex publish different signup lists, and the in-app screens can ask for more than a summary. Read the page for the app you are actually joining.
The Spark Play listing says you need a car, a smartphone, and vehicle insurance, and that signup includes a background check. After that, you wait for zone availability and for details to access the app. Spark’s own site says you are paid for each delivery you complete and that you choose which offers to accept. The Play listing says you keep 100 percent of confirmed tips. Confirm the current terms inside the app. Apps edit terms.
Amazon’s FAQ says you must be 19 or older, have access to a 4-door midsize sedan or larger, hold a full Canadian driver’s licence, have a social insurance number, have a checking or savings account for payment, have an iPhone or Android, and pass a background check. The FAQ uses the word “checking.” Learner’s permits, international licences, identification cards, and motorcycle licences are not accepted. Amazon employees are not eligible. The FAQ says a background check includes a review of motor vehicle records, that you select a service area, watch onboarding videos, and provide tax and payment details. Android and iPhone version floors are on that same FAQ. This guide does not copy the unsupported-phone list. Open the FAQ before you rely on an older handset.
Amazon says you may use a car with enough space, including most 4-door midsize sedans, a truck with a covered bed, an SUV, or a van. Trucks with open beds are not eligible. If you arrive without space, or with the cabin full of personal items, Amazon says you may be turned away and the instance included in your delivery history.
What should you settle before the first package courier block in Canada?
Before the first package courier block in Canada, your insurer needs to know you will deliver goods for pay, and the cargo area needs to be empty enough for the order. Amazon’s FAQ is explicit that insurance is your responsibility to understand, and that the rules differ by province.
On that FAQ, Amazon says it is unable to obtain coverage for delivery of goods by independent partners in British Columbia, that you should tell your insurer you intend to do commercial activity, and that a personal policy may permit certain commercial use for a limited number of days a month. Amazon gives “six days per month” as an example and says it cannot interpret your policy. In Ontario and Alberta, the same FAQ says Amazon’s auto policy may be supplemental while you are delivering, that it does not replace your personal policy, and that you must tell your insurer. Loss or damage coverages under Amazon’s policy, on that page, depend on matching coverages you already carry, such as collision. Read the provincial section on the FAQ before you reserve a block. This is not insurance advice.
For Spark, the Play listing requires vehicle insurance and does not publish a national commercial policy in that short description. Ask your insurer about paid delivery of store orders. The logo on the bag does not change the policy.
A folding hand truck TODO-AFFILIATE helps on flat ground and does not solve ice or a narrow stairwell. A couple of cargo bins TODO-AFFILIATE keep small parcels from sliding. Both are category searches. Andrew has not reviewed them. Park courier deposits apart from rent. KOHO TODO-AFFILIATE is one Canadian account for that float. It is not a block.
Example message. A generic note to someone you know. It did not produce a block, and nobody is claimed to have replied.
Hello. I am applying for store-order delivery and I have not driven yet. Is the Walmart at [intersection] actually handing bags to app drivers, or is the lot only for customers? I am not asking you to order anything.
You do not flyer a neighbourhood to get Spark offers. The app sends the offer. Leave parcels only where the app and the customer authorized.
What should you track on the first courier offers in Canada?
On the first courier offers in Canada, track the pay shown, the minutes from arrival at the store or station until the last stop, the kilometres, and any time you waited before the order existed. Unpaid waiting is part of the job. A high figure per stop hides twelve stops in three suburbs if you only write down the pay.
Step 1: Write the offer you accepted and the ones you declined
Stops, distance, and the reason you declined. “Too many suburbs” is a useful note.
Step 2: Write the clock, including the queue
Start when you arrived, not when you rolled the first parcel. The queue is real time.
Step 3: Write fuel and a ticket if you got one
Look up a loading-zone fine on the city’s page. This guide does not state one.
Example block log. This blank is not a courier’s real day.
Date and pickup site. Offer or block pay shown: $__ . Arrived: __ . Last stop: __ . Kilometres: __ . Stops: __ . Declined because: __ .
How do you judge whether a first courier block was worth it in Canada?
You judge a first courier block in Canada by the pay shown minus a fuel figure you chose, divided by the hours from arrival to the last stop. You do not set the customer’s price. Spark pays for completed deliveries you accept. Amazon offers blocks. Neither page used here publishes a wage you can budget.
Illustrative example. Suppose a block shows $64 for a window Amazon describes as typically 2 to 4 hours, and you are out for 3.5 hours including the queue, driving 45 kilometres. Suppose you assume fuel at $0.18 a kilometre. That is an assumption, not a CRA rate. Fuel is $8.10. The remainder is $55.90, or about $16 an hour in this sketch, before insurance, wear, and a block that runs long. If the same pay takes 5 hours, the hour falls. Do not copy $64 or $0.18. This is not a typical result. Do not treat a marketing range on an Amazon homepage as this sketch.
| Choice in week one | Why it is the test | Why it is a trap |
|---|---|---|
| One offer you can lift and fit | You learn the queue and the kilometres | It is not a van purchase |
| A high per-stop figure across three suburbs | The map is the job | The hour disappears in traffic |
| Buying a vehicle while waitlisted | The zone may never open | The Play listing says you are notified when there is availability |
What does a 14-day plan for package courier work in Canada look like?
A 14-day plan for package courier work in Canada should end with one submitted application and a written insurance answer. A block is a bonus. An interest-list email that never comes is a result. This plan does not promise offers.
Days 1 and 2: Match your town to the list
Read the Spark city list and the Flex locations page. If you are on neither, download the app only to join the interest list Amazon describes. Call the insurer before you promise the app you are ready.
Days 3 to 5: One application
Complete Spark’s enrollment and background check, or Flex’s onboarding if a spot is open. Have the cargo area empty. Do not apply with a learner’s permit. Amazon’s FAQ rejects it.
Days 6 to 9: Wait, or take one offer you can carry
If the zone is closed, do not circle the store. If an offer appears, accept one you can lift and that fits. Decline the rest. Photograph nothing that shows a customer’s address in a group chat.
Days 10 to 14: Score the log or the silence
If you drove, subtract fuel from the pay and divide by hours on site. If you did not drive, the decision is whether to stay on that waitlist. Do not finance a different vehicle on 14 days of silence.
What mistakes show up in the first week of package courier work in Canada?
Common first-week mistakes in package courier work in Canada are showing up in a car that cannot hold the order, accepting a pretty per-stop number that hides a long loop, and leaving a parcel with a neighbour because it was convenient. Amazon says an open truck bed is not eligible, and that arriving full of personal items can get you turned away.
Skipping the insurer call because the bag says Walmart is the same mistake in a different logo. Buying bins, a dolly, and a cargo trailer before the zone is open spends the money the week was supposed to measure.
Which tax rules apply to the first courier deposits in Canada?
Package courier income in Canada is self-employment income reported on Form T2125, and self-employed couriers pay the whole Canada Pension Plan contribution on the net. GST/HST follows the $30,000 small-supplier test. Package delivery is not the taxi and ride-sharing first-fare rule. Nova Scotia’s HST is 14% as of 1 April 2025 on the CRA charge and collect table, and Quebec charges GST and QST.
This is not tax, legal, or insurance advice.
Keep offer summaries, fuel receipts, and a kilometre log. An app may send a T4A. Confirm any rate you must charge with the GST/HST calculator. If a local company hires you as an employee instead, the tax story changes. Ask before you start. The word “contractor” on a poster is not always how the CRA will see the relationship.
Refresh the Spark city list, the Flex locations page, and the GST/HST rates when you next read this page.
Which guides sit next to a first week of package courier work in Canada?
The setup is how to start package courier work in Canada. Restaurant deliveries are your first week of food delivery in Canada. Shopping the list yourself is your first week of grocery shopping in Canada.
What are the common questions?
Will I get a delivery block in the first week in Canada?
Not always. Spark’s Play listing says you are notified when your preferred zone has availability. Amazon’s FAQ says an interest list means spots are not open yet. A wait is a possible result of the fortnight. This page does not promise an offer.
Where does Amazon Flex operate in Canada?
The locations page lists Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, London, Toronto (GTA), Hamilton, Halifax, Ottawa, and Windsor. If your city is missing, the page says you can create an account to be notified later. The list can change.
What vehicle does Amazon Flex want in Canada?
The FAQ says a 4-door midsize sedan or larger, including a covered truck bed, SUV, or van. Open beds are not eligible. You need a full Canadian licence. Learner’s permits and international licences are not accepted on that page.
Do I need commercial insurance for Spark or Flex in Canada?
You need a policy that allows paid delivery of goods in the province where the car is plated. Amazon’s FAQ tells British Columbia drivers it cannot obtain that coverage for them, and it tells Ontario and Alberta drivers that any Amazon policy is supplemental. Ask your insurer. This is not insurance advice.
Is package courier pay in Canada guaranteed?
No. Spark pays for completed deliveries you choose to accept. Amazon describes blocks that are typically 2 to 4 hours and does not promise how many you will see. Track a real block before you judge the work. The labelled arithmetic in this guide is an assumption.
